Kokusai dori

Kokusai-dori, the busiest street in Naha City, is a symbol of okinawafs recovery under U.S. military Government Rule.

It was once called a gMiraculous One Mileh, because the area was covered with damp soil and grew sweet potatoes. Many graves were also sighted in this area. After the end of the battle of okinawa, people gathered to this area from the evacuation camps in the northern regions of okinawa.

Today, along the street, there are department stores, restaurants, gift shops, shopping malls, and discos where tourists enjoy walking and shopping. However, some tourists are disappointed with this street because it resembles a little Ginza of Tokyo. Also, it is possible to see some of the latest fashions here because okinawa has been communicating with and receiving many foreign people, and has been influenced by their cultures. Some travelers occupy small spots to sell their home-made crafts. Fortune tellers also carry on business on the street trying to help people with their problems.

Kokusai-dori is jammed with cars, busses, and taxis moving like giant centipedes. Others call this street a moving parking lot.

Many festivals and parades are held on Kokusai-dori. Many people gather here for these events. During the U.S. occupation, this street was one of the main locations for people to gather to demonstrate against the U.S. Government.
