Aha Hamlet Community

The Aha Hamlet Community of Kunigami Village, located in northern okinawa, still has scenes of the farmers lifestyle of pre-war okinawa. Houses with thatched roofs stand on small hills along both sides of the Aha River. Stone pavement connects the pathway to homes on the hillside, and surrounding the village, is a deep green forest. Sometimes the protected species Noguchi-gera(woodpecker) and other birds appear near the village.

Downstream of the nearby river, a small harbor was formerly used by the Yanbaru-sen (a ship) for carrying wood from the northern mountain region to Naha and Yonabaru, and also for bringing back daily necessities for the area. However, due to development over a long period, the flow of the river water became less and less. Presently, the river is very shallow, but it is the best place for children to play and swim.

Tanaga-gumui, upstream of the river, is known for its many rare plants such as the Ryukyu-asebi, Aoyagiso, Yakushima-sumire, Koke-tanpopo, and Yanbaru-mayumi. The area where the plants are located was designated a National Natural Monument in 1972. In the downstream area, another Prefectural Natural Monument, the Sakishima sapan tree, which has board-shaped roots, grows in crowded groups.

The Aha hamlet community may give an unexpected impression to those not having any experience beyond urban living.
