Kinville

Kinville is a night life zone created by U.S. Marines based at Camp Hansen in Kin Town. Kinville is still an active base town somewhat similar to okinawa City, which faces Kadena Air Base, but its activities have subsided considerably compared to its peak when Camp Hansen was full of Marines from the Vietnam War.

The construction of Camp Hansen started in 1959 in Kin Town, when it was still a very quiet small community. Construction workers were called not only from okinawa but also from mainland Japan. During the Vietnam War, Camp Hansen was the busiest Marine base in East Asia. It was a temporary resting place for Marines going to and from Vietnam. That was the time when restaurants, bars, clubs, hotels, barbershops, and pawn shops began to open in front of the gate of Camp Hansen. As it grew, Marines began to call it Kinville. Since Marines were not able to spend their money in the war, they spent their money in Kinville, which collected many dollars from those soldiers.

However, it did not last long. When the war ended, many Marines went back home to the United States. The Reversion of okinawa to Japan changed the currency from the dollar to the yen. Devalued dollars did not help either. Many stores in Kinville closed down and went out of business. In order to keep their businesses, restaurants and bars started to advertise to local customers, hoping to gain valuable Japanese yen instead of devalued U.S. dollars.

Many Japanese hostesses left Kinville, and in their place, Philippino hostesses were called in. The only time when Kinville has some excitement is when a great number of Marines are called in to Camp Hansen for special duty.

Kinville and other towns similar to it are one of the aspects of Okinawan history with U.S. military bases.
