Okinawa Exposition Memorial National Park
The okinawa Exposition Memorial National Park is located in Motobu Township, where Japans first International Ocean Exposition was held in 1975 to help the economic development of okinawa. After the exposition the site became a park operated by the national government. It is a tour stop and a leisure spot for visitors as well as prefectural residents.
Within the park there is the okinawa Pavilion, a large red-roofed building modeled after typical traditional Okinawan houses. The pavilion exhibits the history and spirit of okinawa. At another attraction at the south end of the park, a tower marks the location of a tropical, botanical garden housing fruit trees and flowers. The garden holds 2,000 species and 8,000 orchid plants. It is the largest orchid exhibition center in Japan. Another point of interest, the oceanarium, is home to 6,000 colorful tropical fish; it even has large sharks. There have been occasions when fishermen have caught rare fish and presented them to the giant water exhibit for study. The Oceanic Cultures Hall displays the history and lifestyles of the people of the South Pacific who have been influenced greatly by the ocean. There is also a Ryukyuan village with full-scale representations of buildings reflecting the lifestyle of old okinawa. On the southern side of the park, one can see the Aquapolis, which will be relocated to the waters off New Naha Port in the future.
There are many other interesting events and exhibitions held throughout the year at Expo, such as flower exhibitions, the Trim Marathon and a picture drawing contest.
