Ryukyu Mura

Ryukyu-mura, located in Onna Village, is a garden reproducing the old Okinawan lifestyle. It is a collection of typical wooden homes with red-tiled roofs from okinawa, Miyako Island and Kume Island reconstructed in their original form with yards surrounded by coral stone walls, all bringing back the atmosphere of yesteryear. A native breed of chicken also struts about scratching for food. Today we can seldom see such nostalgic scenes of old okinawa, where the older generation may remember their childhood days and younger people may learn of the life and environment their grandparents experienced.

Within the site, local women wearing clothes made from native textiles demonstrate the use of looms while others make sata-andagi a type of sugar doughnut. The doughnuts are sold hot and fresh for visitors to taste with tea, having a sort of okinawa tea time as enjoyed in days past. Young potters create dishes, cups and shisa in traditional ways along with more modern pottery. Various goods are exhibited and items can be bought to remember a visit to okinawa.

In the central area of the site, a big, black bull pulls a sugar mill round and round, the method for making raw sugar in the past.

A walk through the Ryukyu-mura is quiet and peaceful, showing scenes of the not too distant past of okinawa that may soon be gone in the progress of time.
