okinawa was predominately a trading center, supported by fishing and some agriculture. It was only natural that someone that spent much of their day with an oar in their hand would find it a handy weapon. okinawa was known as the Ryukyu Kingdom, a trading nation with a distinct culture. For 400 years, starting during the late 1300’s, this island nation was ruled by royalty and developed a flourishing trade with China, Japan, Korea and the East Indies. okinawa became the trial ground for a new system designed to exact compliance from local authorities by fiscal pressure, rewarding the cooperative and punishing the recalcitrant by either pouring in various development funds or withholding them. Such measures were first adopted against the Nago City assembly in 1999, and funds were subsequently poured into “Northern District Development” as part of the price of persuasion.

okinawa has many remains of a unique type of castle or fortress called Gusuku. These are believed to be the predecessors of Japan’s castles. okinawa’s have remarkably clean arteries and low cholesterol. The Japan National Tourist Organization (JNTO) designates as part of the network only tourist information offices having full-time staff members with foreign language skills and brochures written in those languages. As of June 1, a total of 222 offices were registered nationwide, introduced by JNTO through its Web site and various advertisements.

Some 188,800 foreign tourists visited Naha in 2007, a 48.7 percent increase over the previous year and attributed to the increased number of large cruise ships and charter flights coming to okinawa.

There are 17 English-speaking staff members at the center in Makishi, along with speakers of Chinese, French and Spanish. “At this point, only a few staffers at the actual tourist sites can speak a foreign language. It is, therefore, our next assignment to find a way to assist them with their language skills,” said one center employee.
